International level guide

What do Levels 1–7 mean?

The levels describe the reasoning demanded by a question, not a student's age or overall ability. The international comparisons below are approximate guides; curricula and exam boards differ.

Level 1: BeginnerMiddle school / early secondary school

Basic formula substitution with a small set of formulas, similar to middle-school or early high-school physics.

Typical next focus

Practice direct substitutions and unit checks until the basic formulas feel familiar.

Level 2: IntermediateIntroductory high-school physics

Choosing the correct formula, using more context, and doing one intermediate step.

Typical next focus

Work on spotting which quantity is unknown and which formula connects the given information.

Level 3: ApprenticeGeneral high-school physics

Combining multiple concepts in a simple context, with more formulas and more reasoning.

Typical next focus

Try questions that combine two related formulas or concepts in a compact setup.

Level 4: AdvancedUpper-secondary exams / AP Physics 1-style foundations

Standard upper-secondary physics with multi-step modeling, algebra, and complete exam-style solutions.

Strengthen full exam-style solutions: model the situation, choose laws, solve, and check units.

Level 5: NinjaAdvanced high school / early olympiad selection

Difficult upper-secondary questions with hidden structure, including first-round national physics olympiad style.

Level 6: MasterAP Physics C / first-year college or university

AP Physics C / first-year university style questions. Broad, technical, and challenging, but not as puzzle-like as olympiad problems.

Level 7: OlympianNational and international physics olympiad

Real physics olympiad problem-solving level, including IPhO-style reasoning.

Practice olympiad-style problems that reward approximations, symmetry, limiting cases, and clear reasoning.

A level is a starting point

You may be at different levels in different subjects. A student can, for example, be comfortable with Level 6 mechanics while still developing Level 3 electromagnetism skills. ScalaPhysics is designed to let each practice session match that difference.
